Marche wines awarded in the 2016 edition of the best Italian wine guide

Type of wine: red

Classification: Rosso Piceno Denominazione di Origine Controllata Superiore

Grapes: 70% Montepulciano, 30% Sangiovese

Growing area: the Marche, province of Ascoli Piceno
Location: sites facing the fortress of Acquaviva, in the heart of the Superiore zone of the Piceno district
Age: 8 to 30 years
Soils: derived from alluvially-deposited seabed sediment, predominantly Plio-Pleistocene and Miocene, with predominance of clay in the inland areas, with sand and rock sloping down to the coast
Aspect and elevation: hillsides sloping towards the Adriatic sea, in mostly sunny sites at 150-350 metres
Training system: guyot and double guyot.
Vineyard density: 1.700 - 4.000 vines/ha.
Yield: 8-9 t/ha.

Vinification and maturation
Harvest: hand picking, with rigorous quality selection of the grapes
Vinification: in steel fermenters, with frequent daily pumpovers and lengthy maceration on the skins
Maturation: a year in large Allier and Slavonian oak barrels, and a further year in the bottle in temperature-controlled storage

Tasting notes
Appearance: a luminous ruby-red colour tending to garnet at the rim
Bouquet: a refined, very lengthy nose presents intense aromas of wild cherry melding impressively into subtler impressions of dried plum, while a generous florality infuses everything
Palate: impressive immediately for its supple tannins and fresh sapidity, its balance, smoothness, and perfect alcoholic warmth. It exhibits fine weight and length

Cellaring: do not be too hasty with Roccaviva Piceno Superiore, since it expresses its finest qualities two years after harvest. It is a wine of great breed that deserves careful attention and slow growth, and then serious attention when enjoying it.

Serving suggestions: Roccaviva is ultra-versatile, and will complement meat-sauced pastas, agnolotti, traditional Marche vincisgrassi, lasagne alla Bolognese, beef marinades and stews, grilled meat, small game, medium-aged cheeses
Serving temperature 18° C.

Alcohol: 13% vol.
